AS ABOVE SO BELOW / SUR LA TERRE COMME AU CIEL

artist(s): Laura Mannelli Gast Bouschet et Nadine Hilbert
curator(s): Kevin Muhlen, Emmanuel Cuisinier

The title of the exhibition As above so below presented at the Arts Center of Enghien-les-Bains refers to an axiom of the alchemical literature of Antiquity putting in comparison what is above with what is below - heaven and earth, paradise and hell - thus making what semantic, scientific, and cultual traditions come together: at once a dive into the depths and an elevation towards the ethers.

For this new chapter, the Arts Center Enghien-les-Bains, in association with Casino Luxembourg, offers an exploration of the abyss led by Luxembourg artists. In these spaces - physical, mental, fictional or virtual - devoid of natural light, the human being is confronted with his own worries.

Thus, Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert question the principles of structure or power over their photographic, video and pictorial work. In their recent works, they confront the brute forces of nature with the (dysfunctions) of our contemporary society. Cocytus Defrosted exposes us to the thawing of the lake that once immobilized Lucifer by the ice in the depths of the Underworld.

Laura Mannelli, architect and artist, is interested in issues related to spaces at the crossroads of physical and virtual realities. The project The Promises of Monsters, as well as its prologue in virtual reality Near Dante Experience (on an initiative of Art Zoyd, with the artistic collaboration of Gerard Hourbette), start from wandering dantesque in dark and deep universes where the light is the only guide. This same light - physical, spiritual and symbolic - raises the question of our perceptual system of "vision" and our capacity to see reality.
