Centrally located on the European continent, Luxembourg is at the edge of the important artistic currents from France and Germany, as well as the numerous movements which are developing in Belgium and the Netherlands. This mixture of spheres of influence, but also of generations is at the root of this exhibition of works from the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Rudi Fuchs, the curator of this exhibition and director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, is known for discovering unexpected parallels between artists and for being unafraid to present these controversial contrasts to the public. Affinités électives - Peinture européenne en dialogue shows works of more than fifty European painters, combining famous with some lesser known and young artists, such as Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet, Jan Schoonhoven, Karel Appel, Roger Raveel, Arman, Piero Manzoni, Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, Günther Förg, Marlene Dumas, Rob Birza.

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has been a platform for contemporary art since 1945. It has organised numerous exhibitions introducing recent developments to the public. This privileged link with the avant-garde has in many instances led to the acquisition of works for the collection, which is consequently centred around the last fifty years.
