John Armleder – Wall Paintings (1967–1998)

artist(s): John Armleder
curator(s): Enrico Lunghi

In his pictorial approach, John Armleder appropriates the surface of the wall as a whole. He specifically acknowledges its presence by using it as the canvas for his Wall Paintings. The problem however with wall paintings in contemporary art exhibitions - unlike with frescoes, for example - is that they need to be removed and everything painted white again, once the exhibition closes. So John Armleder suggests a retrospective insight into his Wall Paintings: on one hand, as an opportunity to paint again what has been painted over, to question the making and the status of painting, still frequently considered the most elevated art form, but also as an opportunity to think about the communicative value of painting.
A selection of eight Wall Paintings of which one has been specifically created for this exhibition, will be realised in two rooms of the Casino Luxembourg.
