La commedia dell’arte — L’art en tant que mascarade

artist(s): Alexander Glandien, Clara Thomine, Loïc Vanderstichelen, Jean-Paul Jacquet
curator(s): Bettina Heldenstein

The commedia dell'arte (literally ‘theatre played by people from the art', meaning professional actors) is a popular genre of Italian theatre in which masked actors perform improvised comedic plays characterised by naivety, ruse and ingenuity.

The films by Alexander Glandien, Clara Thomine, Loïc Vanderstichelen and Jean-Paul Jacquet presented as part of the screening programme La commedia dell'arte use subterfuge, stratagems and wit to blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. They take a humorous look at the art world, while simultaneously questioning the persistent desire to document and comment it at any cost.
