Under the title Many Colored Objects Placed Side by Side to Form a Row of Many Colored Objects after a work by Lawrence Weiner for Documenta 7 in Kassel (1982), the Casino Luxembourg will display from October 29th, 2000 to February 11th, 2001 an important selection of major works from the collection of Annick and Anton Herbert. Some 80 works, of which many are emblematic of the artistic approach of the artists represented, will be shown to the public. After the presentation at the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven in 1984, this is only the second time that part of this collection - which has considerably grown since - is revealed to the public eye.

Annick and Anton Herbert's collection which includes major works by artists who have contributed to the artistic development of the second half of the 20th century, is one of the most important collections in Europe. Started in the early 1970s, it is essentially based on the strong personalities who emerged from the Minimal Art, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera, as well as artists with strong individualistic approaches, such as Marcel Broodthaers, Gilbert & George or Bruce Nauman. While remaining true to their commitment to these artists, whose work they have followed closely for nearly thirty years, the collectors have extended their collection by including works by such artists as Jean-Marc Bustamante, Thomas Schütte or Jan Vercruysse, and the approaches of Franz West, Martin Kippenberger and Mike Kelley.

The exhibition Many Colored Objects Placed Side by Side provides an opportunity for discovering this outstanding collection - an immediate result of the Herbert's passion for contemporary art as well as their rigorous choices - engaged in a dialogue with the spaces of the Casino Luxembourg: monographic ensembles with works by Broodthaers, Nauman and Gilbert & George, rooms devoted to Minimal Art, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera, a showcase of graphic works and, in the ground-floor and first-floor lobbies, an axis made up of pieces by West, Kippenberger and Kelley.
