Re:Location 4 : Vera Weisgerber & Cosmin Pop

artist(s): Vera Weisgerber & Cosmin Pop
curator(s): Maria Rus Bojan, Enrico Lunghi

As concerns the Casino Luxembourg, Re:Location 4 is the second bilateral exchange taking place within the frame of the European project Re:Location 1-7 / Shake. As a result of close collaboration between the International Centre of Contemporary Art of Bucarest - meanwhile replaced by the ArtStudio of Cluj - in Romania and the Casino Luxembourg, the two selected artists, Vera Weisgerber and Cosmin Pop, had been able to work together for several months and to prepare an exhibition shown first in Romania and then in Luxemburg.

One of the objectives of Re:Location is to foster artistic exchanges, taking into account the realities of the different European art contexts. The selection of the artists was carried out after the curators had visited each the artistic scene of the city of the other. In this manner, Maria Bojan (ArtStudio, Cluj) invited Vera Weisgerber on the base of her photographic and video work strongly engaged in social realities while maintaining a poetic touch. Enrico Lunghi's (Casino Luxembourg) choice fell on Cosmin Pop for his approach to and his multilateral references about art, a mixture of video, film, performance, and music.

In reaction to the particular contexts in which they were brought to work together, Cosmin Pop and Vera Weisgerber repainted, in Cluj, the façade of the ancient synagogue, presently hosting the Tranzit Foundation, the city's centre of arts. Both the structure and the colours of the geometric motive employed derive from a superposition of the colours of three flags - the Romanian, the Hungarian and the Luxemburgish -, thereby echoing the complex regional cultural and social structures. Furthermore, on the day of the opening, Cosmin Pop and Vera Weisgerber organized a concert at that same place, created a visual installation in the halls of Cluj's museum of art and a sound installation in the baroque courtyard of the same building, and initiated public conferences both at the French Cultural Centre and the Academy of Arts of Cluj. It is the first time ever that so many cultural institutions of this city have seen themselves engaged in one and the same art project.

At the Casino Luxembourg, Cosmin Pop and Vera Weisgerber will document this work, complementing it with a new video shot in Luxemburg, as well as with the exhibition, in museum show cases, of the works by twelve Romanian artists having participated, upon invitation of the Austrian artist Markus Seidl, in the project Re:Location 2 between Linz and Cluj in 2001. Thus, the institutional network of the project Re:Location 1-7 / Shake likewise extends amongst the participating artists.
