Sean Scully – The Catherine Paintings (1979–1995) & Watercolors
artist(s): Sean Scully
curator(s): Enrico Lunghi
Casino Luxembourg presents the Catherine Paintings as well as twenty watercolours by Sean Scully. Born in Ireland, Sean Scully grew up in London and has been living and working for many years in New York. Since 1979, the artist has been dedicating each year a for him particularly important painting to his wife Catherine. Today there are seventeen of them, and together they form a kind of retrospective, giving an original insight into the most creative period in the life of this today internationally renowned artist. As soon as 1980, Sean Scully radically abandons his structuralist painting which had characterized him until then. Henceforth, his large-size paintings - mostly divided up into several parts - are dominated by horizontal or vertical stripes or blocs and combine subjective expression with formalist expression. They are not only a testimony to the pictorial richness, but also reflect our very own situations and conditions of life.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with The British Council.
