Les Mardis de l'Art - A.I.R. extension#14. A guided tour – part 2

Lecture by Katleen Vermeir, Ronny Heiremans and Nav Haq

Rather than talking "about" their work, the Belgian artists Katleen Vermeir & Ronny Heiremans explore the format of a lecture as a means to represent architecture, and more specific, their own domestic space. In their lectures, the artists invite different "guests" whose occupations and points of view are linked to their research on the mediation of architecture: e.g. architects, real-estate agents, curators, feng shui specialists... They take the audience on a guided tour through their habitat. The lecture unfolds like a narrative, the scenario of which is projected on a screen. The guide's descriptions and comments offer the audience a view, not only on the space but also on the specific way it is perceived. He/she walks from space to space, from the staircase all the way up to the roof garden, taking Le Corbusier's "promenade architecturale" as his/her inspiration and as a departure for the artists' mediated conversation.

Since 2006, Katleen Vermeir & Ronny Heiremans have been working on A.I.R., an ongoing project, encompassing various collaborations in different formats. A.I.R. (artist in residence) refers to the appropriation of empty industrial spaces by artists in New York in the 1960s. The project examines architecture as a significant ideological gesture. It allows Vermeir & Heiremans to deconstruct their own renovated post-industrial space as a system of representation, a comment on the modern habit of relating to architecture not from physical experience, but rather from magazines, television, websites, exhibitions... Since 2006, they have been developing A.I.R. as a series of mediated extensions of their habitat. For this upcoming lecture the artists have invited Nav Haq (exhibition curator at Arnolfini in Bristol) as a guest in their home.
