I'm terribly sorry

artist(s): Rachel MacLean

I'm Terribly Sorry is a virtual reality video set in a dystopian British urban landscape filled with oversized Union Jack-emblazoned tourist merchandise. Several privileged city dwellers approach the user, each of whom has a large smartphone for a head. Initially benign and apologetic, they tell convoluted stories and attempt to elicit money, with their protestations soon becoming more sinister, finally leading to a bloody tragedy... or not.

Apology or criticism of the gratuitous violence of video games? The artist's deadpan cynicism towards Brexit? The interpretations will not fail to sprout.

Based in Glasgow, Rachel Maclean (b.1987, Edinburgh) graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2009. Her work came to public attention in New Contemporaries later that year. In 2017, she represented Scotland at the 57th Venice Bienniale. She has since received significant acclaim, with major commissions and solo shows at Arsenal Contemporary New York; Kunsthalle, Winterthur; Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Wiesbaden; The National Gallery, London; Zabludowicz Collection, London; KWM Artcenter, Beijing; Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh; The Hugh Lane, Dublin City Gallery, Dublin; The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Casino Luxembourg; Artpace San Antonio, Texas; HOME Gallery, Manchester and Tate Britain, London.
