Inviter 5 / Sherrie Levine

Casino Luxembourg presents Inviter, an exhibition series organised by Michel Assenmaker. Inviter is an exhibition that develops in time without however being continuous. After Pascal Convert, Peter Downsbrough, Giovanni Anselmo and Martine Cloots, Sherrie Levine will be the fifth guest of the series.Sherrie Levine writes in 1985: "I like to think of my paintings as membranes permeable from both sides so there is an easy flow between the past and the future, between my history and yours". The permeability the artist refers to characterises her way of producing works of art. She makes e.g. reproductions of photographies by Weston or Evans, or reproduces paintings, which she then presents as such. In other words, her works draw their inspiration from artistic ready-mades. Acting in fact as a copyist, she questions the fictional character of original works, of nature, of the artist, of the pictural support, considering that fiction is the result of a cultural process.
