Ursula K. Le Guin – The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction

Presented by Stilbé Schroeder, curator and head of exhibitions at Casino Luxembourg

In English

VENUE: Casino Display, 1, rue de la Loge, Luxembourg

In this short essay, first published in 1989 in a non-fiction collection entitled Dancing on the Edge of the World: Thoughts on Words, Women, Places, the visionary author Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) tells the story of human origin by redefining technology as a cultural carrier bag rather than a weapon of domination. Hacking the linear, progressive mode of Techno-Heroic, the Carrier Bag Theory of human evolution proposes: “Before the tool that forced energy outward, we made the tool that brings energy home.”

16.05 - 04.07.2024

Since the start of the 2023 academic year, Casino Luxembourg has been offering a monthly book club. Given the success of the first edition, we've decided on a  sequel for spring/summer 2024. casinoBookclub, which takes place at Casino Display, explores the links between art, reality and fiction through books proposed by members of Casino or external guests.

The audience becomes thus an active participant in the discussions around the proposed readings.

casinoBookclub takes place in collaboration with CID | Fraen an Gender.

All the books and texts discussed during casinoBookclub are available at Casino Luxembourg, for free consultation at the InfoLab and for sale at the bookshop.
