Images at Work - film conference

VENUE : Cinémathèque, 17, place du Théâtre, Luxembourg

Lecture by Laura Lux, curator of the group exhibition Images at Work (about 30’) followed by a screening of medium length works (108’)

In English

Since the Lumière brothers recorded their employees leaving the factory with the cinematograph, the camera lens has become a crucial witness to the evolutions, histories and politics surrounding labour. In this film conference, the researcher and curator of the current Images at Work exhibition at Casino, Laura Lux, will talk about the Lumières’ beginnings and their early fascination with the depiction of work while showing three recordings of their iconic Workers Leaving the Factory (La Sortie de l'usine Lumière à Lyon, 1895).

The lecture will then discuss the legacy of the Lumière brothers, the criticism voiced against their naturalist portrayal of labour and their influence on contemporary documentary practices, including on the directors of the works that will screen after the talk: Harun Farocki, Kevin Jerome Everson and Sharon Lockhart.
