Artist(s)
Yuko Kominami, Ichiko Funai, danseuse et chorégraphe

butoh dance workshop followed by a public performance as part of the exhibition Stronger than memory and weaker than dewdrops

Butoh is a dance that is close to performance art, revolutionary and transgressive. Influenced by Buddhism and Shinto beliefs, Butoh expresses the new sufferings and problems of post-war Japanese society.

In this workshop, we go on a journey inside and outside our bodies, through various landscapes where our adventures and memories can meet and be translated into movement.

Born in 1973 in Japan, Yuko Kominami studied Butoh and dance in Tokyo. After completing her MA in Dance Cultures, Histories and Practices at the University of Surrey in 2006, she began working as a freelance dance and performance artist. Over the years she has collaborated with many dancers, choreographers, artists, musicians and theatre directors from different landscapes, and has performed at leading festivals such as June Events Festival - Atelier de Paris Carolyn Carlson, Les Repérages Danse in Lille, Festivalul International de Teatru de la Sibiu, Bodyradical in Budapest, Odisha Biennial in India, or the Venice International Film Festival.

Notable works: Ones Voices (2004) with Steve Kaspar, Linnunrata (2007), reMEMBRANEce (2009), Project O (2010) with Rajivan Ayyappan and Emanuela Iacopini, Mayu (2011) with Tomás Tello, Recollections (2012) with Kunihiko Matsuo, Winter Worm-Summer Grass (2013), Three Short Stories (2015) with Sayoko Onishi, Dreaming Scarlet Medusa (2017), Iwa-kagami (2018), Sublimation (2019), a VR project by Karolina Markiewicz and Pascal Piron.
